Tyson’s Run is a complicated plot with well-developed characters, sparking the question of whether this movie is based on an authentic story. This film follows Tyson, a 15-year-old autistic kid played by Walking Dead actor Major Dodson, and his delicate familial ties. To obtain his father’s approval, he plans to run a marathon. To achieve this goal, he teamed up with a champion runner named Aklilu. Tyson’s Run is intended to be inspirational, but it pushes certain damaging beliefs about overcoming autism, rather than recognizing autism spectrum disorder as a neurotype and disadvantage.

Despite this, Tyson’s Run has all the characteristics of a “based on a true story” film, which creates ambiguity. The structure appeared to be equivalent to previous problematic inspiration real story films, such as Blind Side, Radio, and Soul Surfer. The characters are well-formed. Many viewers may wonder if director/writer Kim Bass based this story on real-life events.

What’s Tyson Hollerman’s Real Story? 

It’s unclear whether Tyson’s Run was based on a factual story, as some websites praised it as such while others did nothing. However, Kim Bass claimed that the film was loosely based on an accurate story. When speaking with the Observer-Dispatch about Tyson’s Run, Bass said that the story originated with an exchange he had with an aspiring athlete at his son’s school who refused to run since he wasn’t as fast as everyone else.

Bass based the concept on this exchange, which developed into a 15-year-old autistic teenager intending to run a marathon. It is unresolved whether the autism section was written from fresh because he failed to state whether the young person he spoke with was autistic. Hopefully, Bass created this part of Tyson himself because it could appear cruel for an allistic adult to utilize a real-life, young autistic youngster as the basis for a fiction.

Tyson Hollerman’s Character Is Fictional 

Despite appearances, Tyson and Aklilu from Tyson’s Run are fictional characters with no real-life counterparts. Both characters have multifaceted personalities, that lend them an authentic sense. Furthermore, the way Tyson’s autism is depicted in the film feels incredibly anchored in reality, making him feel less like the common image of an autistic person that is commonly seen on screen.

The Tyson’s Run ensemble deserves credit for making the characters show real. Barkhad Abdi done a wonderful job of capturing Aklilu’s demeanor, to the point where he appears to be a real-life person. In addition, Bass deliberately cast Major Dodson, an autistic athlete, as Tyson. Dodson’s life experience provided the character with a distinctive feeling of authenticity that is still unique in Hollywood. The fact that Tyson from Tyson’s Run is mistaken for a real character further reinforces the notion that autistic actors should play autistic characters.

What Aspects of Tyson’s run are based on real life?

While not accurate to history, Tyson’s Run is effectively represented, with an autistic actor representing the primary character. Major Dodson plays Tyson, who has made calls for autistic actors to portray autistic characters. However, Bass declares that he was not aware of Dodson’s autism when he originally cast:

“He was cast based on having done an unbelievably great job.”

Tyson’s relationships with his parents, friends, and mentors are crucial to the narrative, emphasizing the significance of acceptance, support, and hope in his quest for self-discovery and achievement. 

While significant characters such as Shannon (Layla Felder) and Aklilu (Barkhad Abdi) are fictional, they serve as symbols of acceptance and inspiration for Tyson, reflecting the realities of the problems of those with autism expertise.

Bass also noted that while Tyson’s Run is an inspiring film about a boy with autism, “This is just an ordinary family”
