The Cinema History of Godzilla’s Flying Adversaries
Flying Adversaries of Godzilla – Throughout The Cinema History
Godzilla makes an appearance in a large number of Toho films as an antagonist. Since the 1960s, the King of the Monsters has fought in opposition to over a dozen hostile kaiju. Some have been popular enough for inclusion in several motion pictures, while others have only been used once. Godzilla has been confronting other monsters since 1955’s Godzilla Raids Again when he faced combat against Anguirus.
Godzilla’s rich movie career has allowed him to build up an impressive insurgents’ gallery. Nevertheless, this does not suggest that all of his opponents are necessarily villains. After all, there are instances when Godzilla is the true villain, which is why creatures such as Mothra and Baragon, despite having fought him, aren’t deemed Godzilla villains.
First Flying Adversary of Godzilla – King Ghidorah is Godzilla’s Ultimate Nemesis
The first time Godzilla confronted a true foe on the big screen was in 1964’s Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. Ghidorah was introduced as an alien monster sent to conquer the universe, but he was driven off by Godzilla and Rodan, with some help from Mothra. Ghidorah made some extra appearances in the Showa series but was always defeated by Godzilla and one of his allies.
It wasn’t until 1991’s Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah that the two monsters were able to clash in a fair one-on-one encounter. In Godzilla: Final Wars, he was fully reinvented as Monster X, who eventually evolved into Keizer Ghidorah. Ghidorah is acknowledged as Godzilla’s greatest enemy of all time, having faced Godzilla more than any other villain, with his most recent outing in the Monsterverse’s Godzilla: King of Monsters.
Another Evil Counterpart, Another Flying Adversary – Battra Represents Mothra’s Malevolent Mirror Image
Godzilla vs. Mothra featured the first and only sighting of Battra, Mothra’s evil counterpart. According to the film, Mothra is a human protector, nevertheless, Battra mocks humans and perceives them as a threat to the Earth. Battra was formed in particular as a counterpart to Mothra when the Earth (a feeling and sentient living being in early Godzilla lore) saw imminent danger from humanity.
Mothra confronted and defeated Battra 12,000 years before the events of Godzilla vs. Mothra. Battra had been detained in the Arctic before getting released here. After facing Godzilla, Battra recognized he couldn’t prevail without allying with Mothra. Battra subsequently assisted Mothra beat Godzilla, but he died in the process. With Mothra being such an admired character with such deep background information, oddly, Battra hadn’t encountered him outside of comic books and video games since his first movie appearance.
Godzilla’s Flying Adversary Final Battle Featured Destoroyah, Another Malevolent Threat
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, the ultimate film in the Heisei series released in 1995, revealed a side in the wake of the military’s adoption of the Oxygen Destroyer to kill Godzilla decades in the past, in 1954. The Oxygen Destroyer changed a group of crustaceans into Destoroyah, an incredibly powerful and destructive beast. Because Destoroyah was made up of crabs, they could reestablish and change their appearance, which they did, eventually leading to the winged monster who battles Godzilla.
Destoroyah is known as one of Godzilla’s malevolent challengers because he seems intent on causing pain rather than acting naturally or under the control of someone else. Certain scenes in this movie even appear to show the kaiju giggling at Godzilla and his son’s injuries. Godzilla, who was leaking hazardous and at the end of his life, nearly defeated Destoroyah before utilizing what stuck to his life force to save his kid.
Megaguirus, The Flying Menace & Adversary of Godzilla’s Universe
Megaguirus, like Orga, Destoroyah, Battra, and a few others, was a once-only villain. In Godzilla vs. Megagurius, a swarm of giant prehistoric dragonflies known as the Meganulas took some of Godzilla’s power and shipped it to their queen. Because of Godzilla’s energy, the dragonfly evolved to become Megaguirus. She was determined to acquire the balance of Godzilla’s power for herself, which led to her rampage throughout Japan. Though she proved to be a challenge, Godzilla’s atomic breath eradicated the threat she constituted.
