Steve was born and raised in Minnesota, United States, on August 19, 1952. Steve’s father, Wally Pomrenke, raised him on a dairy cattle farm. 

Despite working as a mechanic and fixing machinery for miners in his early years in Minnesota, Steve started to learn the art of gold mining. He first extracted 23 ounces of gold in 10 days using borrowed equipment from a friend. After juggling between machinery fixing and extracting gold, Steve finally decided to pursue gold mining in 1992.

The plot of the American TV reality series Bering Sea Gold is focused on the day-to-day lives of dredge ship owners. After making appearances consecutively for 10 seasons, Steve decided to leave the show. Steve’s absence from the show has sparked rumors as the audience is concerned about him. Steve made appearances on the reality TV show alongside his son and soon-to-be business partner, Shawn Pomrenke, with whom he had a strained relationship. Although there were conflicts and arguments between Steve and Shawn, his father was always there for him. 

According to various new outlets, particularly Distractify, in 2012, Shawn got tangled in a bar fight, exchanging fists and punches, and suddenly got stabbed in the back by an unnamed man. Shawn suffered severe injuries that led him to be hospitalized for a very long time. Only a year later, Shawn had a devastating car accident.
