Is Henry Cavill The Next Wolverine?

Henry Cavill’s surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine may have hinted at what Zack Snyder’s ideal MCU film could look like—in addition to introducing Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to the MCU, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine featured numerous multiversal variations of its namesake heroes. The fun and hilarious Deadpool Corps featured alternate forms of Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth, but Wolverine’s variants in Deadpool & Wolverine were more unexpected and might have a significant impact on the MCU.

Hugh Jackman played the “Worst Wolverine” for most of Deadpool & Wolverine, although his other versions were inspired by some of Marvel Comics’ most famous stories. The one-armed Wolverine from 1995’s Age of Apocalypse, the gambling Patch from 1988, Old Man Logan, the crucified Wolverine on the cover of Uncanny X-Men #251, and John Byrne’s yellow-and-brown Wolverine fighting the Hulk were all incredible to witness. However, the most startling addition was Henry Cavill’s cameo as a new Wolverine version, which might lead to Cavill reuniting with his director from the DCEU’s Man of Steel.

Zack Snyder Loves Henry Cavill As Wolverine

In April 2024, filmmaker Zack Snyder chatted with the Happy Sad Confused podcast and revealed more about his future Wolverine film, which he came close to directing “way back when.” While Snyder stays cautious, stating that he was not “terribly close” to directing a Wolverine-focused picture, he does hint that Logan is a figure he could easily portray in his signature way. Snyder also stated that selecting an actor to play a fresh version of Wolverine would be a “huge conversation,” but Deadpool and Wolverine may have made this much easier.

Henry Cavill As Wolverine Could Reunite With Zack Snyder

Henry Cavill has collaborated with Zack Snyder on several projects, including the DC Extended Universe, where Cavill played Clark Kent’s Superman. Snyder directed Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), the latter after departing from the initial Justice League film in 2017. Snyder’s vision for the DCEU was shattered, and Cavill was squandered in the now-rebooted series. Both deserve superhero redemption.

Zack Snyder’s potential Wolverine film could provide the ideal opportunity for this, especially if Snyder directs Henry Cavill as his Deadpool & Wolverine version of the character. Cavill’s cameo hinted at a more hardened and darker version of the clawed mutant, which would be ideal for Snyder’s unique and contentious directing style. Reuniting Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill for a standalone Wolverine-centric film in the MCU would be wonderful, especially given that this project would continue to explore Marvel Studios’ enormous and ever-expanding cosmos.

Henry Cavill Is Certainly The Best Choice To Play As Wolverine

There has been conjecture that Henry Cavill could be cast as the MCU’s official Wolverine following his debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, but his possible future as the hero would benefit from being placed in a whole new environment. Henry Cavill’s Wolverine, like Channing Tatum’s Gambit, has the potential to return for a solo MCU film. This film may examine the universe in a similar way to Marvel Studios’ planned The Fantastic Four: First Steps, while keeping the Cavillrine independent from the MCU’s own X-Men stories.

Setting this film in an alternate reality would also allow Zack Snyder more creative freedom with the project’s design and structure. Snyder’s instantly recognizable directorial style, which incorporates slow motion, extended takes, elaborate camera work, and a somber tone, differs significantly from the conventional Marvel Studios feature. Developing a multiversal film for Henry Cavill’s Wolverine following Deadpool & Wolverine would allow him to explore places that Marvel Studios would normally shun, while also creating one of the most popular new additions to the MCU.
