Following the most dramatic Bachelor Nation finale ever, Gerry proposed to a very anxious Theresa Nist. The 70-year-old New Jersey financial services advisor accepted Gerry’s proposal, startled and delighted that she wouldn’t be returning home in tears. As Theresa and Gerry rejoiced over their engagement, many people were still shaken by the error Gerry made in the speech that preceded his proposal. Gerry’s mistake nearly left him all alone, even if he was still struggling with his fears.

In an exclusive interview with People, Gerry and Theresa I have described their engagement as memorable. Gerry recalls giving a little speech, then looking at her and saying…’ Theresa, you’re not the person I can live with,’ followed by a long gap. And what I said was, ‘Theresa, you’re not the [appropriate] person for me,’ which was considerably harsher.” Instead of saying something positive to Theresa, he almost ended their relationship. “I quickly said the right line, ‘Theresa, you are the person I can’t live without,’ and the air went back into her body,” Gerry told me.

While Theresa would have been surprised to hear Gerry tell her she wasn’t the appropriate person for him in the first place, it was even more surprising given their chats in the Fantasy Suite. Gerry had told Theresa during their night in the Fantasy Suite that he loved her and intended to propose to her. Theresa had gone into the final day confident, believing Gerry, but when he slipped up, she was less certain. “I exclaimed, ‘Oh my God. So what he said wasn’t correct. He changed his mind. “Someone get me, somebody take me away,” Theresa said. “And then he said the right thing, thank God.”

Season 1 of The Golden Bachelor has been a pleasure to see Theresa and Gerry’s relationship develop. While the pair have only been together for a short time, they intend to leave a lasting impression on the Bachelor franchise when they marry on live television in early January 2024. The couple does not want to waste any time now that they are publicly together and able to discuss their relationship. Although some of The Golden Bachelor viewers believe Leslie Fhima would have been a better choice for Gerry, he is confident that Theresa is the best person for him and his family to grow with.

Still, the audience sincerely hopes that once the temperature in the Bachelor hothouse drops, she may see clearly that she has won by “losing” this round of the franchise.

Leslie Fhima has had a successful career since being on The Golden Bachelor in 2023. The 64-year-old fitness instructor was one of 22 ladies who went on the show to attract Gerry Turner, a retired restaurant owner. She was a perfect match for him and had everything he wanted. She joined the new spinoff to try her hand at romance. Gerry, as expected, admired her and presented her with a rose in week 4.

Leslie, unlike other contestants, wowed viewers when she made her debut on The Golden Bachelor. She made her debut appearance in black lace underwear, offering Gerry a lap dance. The Minnesota-based candidate then pursued Gerry throughout the season, sharing many unforgettable experiences with him.
