Welcome to Derry is the planned prequel to Andy Muscietti’s immensely successful Stephen King films It and It Chapter Two, and with production on the It TV series well started at HBO Max, there’s already much to talk about. The It film and story revolve around the town of Derry, Maine, which is haunted every 27 years by an evil spirit known as Pennywise. Pennywise, a demonic clown with extradimensional roots, may take on a variety of horrific shapes.

Pennywise feeds on fear and children are his favorite feast, making him a terrible antagonist in It and It Chapter Two. While the origins of Pennywise, including why he assumes the guise of a clown, are hinted at in the original Stephen King novel and Muscietti’s It films, much of his history remains unknown. The planned It prequel series Welcome to Derry will focus on the history of Derry’s killer clown and provide a much more in-depth look at how his reign of terror affects the fictional city in Maine.

HBO unveiled a trailer for its forthcoming lineup of episodes coming to Max in 2024 and 2025, just days after filming on the upcoming Stephen King series concluded. Though most of the trailer was taken up by shows such as The Last of Us, there was a little part from Welcome to Derry. Although nothing is revealed, the small snippets hint at the gore and fear that awaits when the It prequel arrives.

Welcome to Derry has been announced, with the announcement made in March 2022 (via Variety), alongside the disclosure that Andy and Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs will produce the It prequel series for HBO Max. Filming began in 2023 but was quickly delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which was finally resolved in November 2023. Producer Jason Fuchs reported that production ended after more than 200 days in August 2024.

The cast of Welcome To Derry

The Welcome to Derry cast has been mostly announced, but there have been no hints as to who the actors in HBO’s It prequel series will portray. The majority of the performers announced thus far are from the show’s younger ensemble, continuing the trend set by It, which had a bunch of misfit adolescents taking on the interdimensional creature. Though there will most likely be some similarities to the cast of the most recent It films, the characters will most likely be unique, given that it is set in the 1960s.

Bill Skarsgård will resume his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Earlier reports stated that he would not feature in the prequel, but the legendary character actor will once again don the clown outfit while also serving as an executive producer. Many ensemble members have been announced, including Alexandra Fuchs, Kimberly Guerrero, Dorian Grey, Thomas Mitchell, BJ Harrison, Peter Outerbridge, Shane Marriott, Chad Rook, Joshua Odjick, and Morningstar Angeline, but their roles remain unknown.

The Plot Of Welcome To Derry

Very little is known about the Welcome to Derry plan. Stephen King never created a prequel to It, so the story for the HBO program will be entirely original. The only verified details are that it will have an origin tale for Pennywise and will take place in the 1960s (via Variety). That’s all we know about the Welcome to Derry story until HBO or Andy Muschietti decides to share more. More information will most likely be revealed whenever HBO releases a complete trailer or official storyline synopsis.

Teaser Trailer Of Welcome To Derry

The first clip for Welcome to Derry has been released as part of HBO’s latest promotional campaign for new and returning shows. The film appears briefly in the “Coming in 2025” section of the video, beginning around 1:35 minutes in. It features a bunch of youngsters riding bikes, Pennywise’s red balloon, and a voiceover reading “This ain’t America, this is Derry.” While the new clip does not offer much, it does provide a fair feel of how the IT prequel series will treat the source material.

HBO published another sizzle reel in August 2024, featuring a teaser from Welcome to Derry’s impending debut season. Though the trailer doesn’t reveal much, it does underline the horrific storytelling and overall dread that will pervade the Stephen King series.
