The Old Guard 2 – Release Date, Cast, Trailer & Everything Else…

Regarding critical reaction, Netflix’s original action films can be hit or miss. Some films, such as Red Notice (Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot), which reputedly cost $200 million to produce, open with awful Rotten Tomatoes scores of 37%, even though the general public approves of the film at 92%. However, Netflix produced an action film in 2020 that was a smash with both critics and fans: The Old Guard, which received scores of 80% and 70% from critics and people, respectively, on the aggregate site.

The Old Guard 2 Sequel

Despite its release more than four years ago, The Old Guard has a sequel in the works, and one of the film’s stars, Luca Marinelli, has shared an update on its progress.

We are certainly looking forward to viewing it, Luca. In addition to Marinelli, The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Greg Rucka wrote the film, and Leandro Fernandez received a writing credit for his illustration work. Gina Prince-Bythewood, recognized for her work on The Woman King (Viola Davis), Love & Basketball, and Beyond the Lights, directed The Old Guard. All of the stars mentioned above have been confirmed to return for The Old Guard 2, featuring Henry Golding and Uma Thurman.

Rucka will write the sequel, and Victoria Mahoney will take up directing duties from Prince-Bythewood. Mahoney made her feature debut with Yelling to the Sky in 2011 and has since spent the majority of her time directing TV episodes for Grey’s Anatomy, Lovecraft Country, and The Morning Show.

While you wait for The Old Guard 2 to premiere on Netflix, there are plenty of good movies to watch. Rebel Ridge, which was recently released, has been the top film on the platform for several days, with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow coming in a close second. Other films presently rounding out the rest of the Netflix top ten include Shark Tale (Will Smith), Sonic the Hedgehog (James Marsden), The Rundown (The Rock), and Aloha (Emma Stone).

When Will The Old Guard 2 Get Released?

Theron stated that the sequel ended filming two years ago and was delayed weeks into post-production, with the lengthy delay most likely due to a shift in Netflix’s objectives when its new leadership took over the streaming behemoth. It is unclear which leadership move Theron is referring to, but a significant shift occurred in January 2023, when Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings announced his resignation as co-CEO and appointment as executive chairman. He was succeeded by Greg Peters, who pioneered Netflix’s subscription strategy.

Netflix’s leadership has since resolved the issue, allowing The Old Guard 2 to complete post-production. Theron stated that there were no significant modifications to the production, implying that the film may continue as planned. If reshoots are required, scheduling time for the performers to return may be more challenging due to the large two-year delay. It presently lacks a release date and is unlikely to be released without a significant marketing push, given the lengthy delay.
